Applesauce Cocoa Bread

  • 1 2/3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Dash of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Vanilla Glaze
Vanilla Glaze Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 3 to 4 tsp milk image placeholder

Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease bottom only of 9x5-inch loaf pan.

In large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add shortening, eggs and applesauce; beat just until blended. Stir in pecans. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cool 15 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely. Prepare Vanilla Glaze; drizzle over bread.


In a small bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar and milk.

Servings: 1/4 cup glaze
