Stir sugar and water over medium heat until sugar dissolves; add vanilla and lemon juice and set aside.
Add milk to dry ingredients; stir. Turn out on floured board; roll into 9x12 rectangle. Spread with berries; roll up from long side and slice into 12 pieces.
Melt 1/2 cup butter in a 9x13-inch pan. Place rolls in pan. Pour sugar syrup over rolls and bake one hour at 350° F.
NOTE: may use apples or peaches but reduce sugar by 1/2 cup.
